    Washinkai Karate Gasshuku 2018

Friday 27th and Saturday 28th April saw Washinkai Karate Ireland (W.K.I.) host its annual Gasshuku (special training event) at the Bawnacre Centre in Irvinestown, Northern Ireland.

Hosted by the Principal of W.K.I., Sensei Dave Martin (6th Dan), and Senior Instructor, Sensei Michele Martin (6th Dan), the training event was facilitated by the Founder of Washinkai, Sensei Chris Thompson (9th Dan).

The event opened with an opportunity for junior karate-ka from the Irvinestown, Enniskillen and Omagh associated clubs, to train with Sensei Thompson. It was then the turn of the senior members to be put through their paces as Kihon and Kata from the Washinkai syllabus was explored in depth.

The evening closed with a senior Dan grading that saw Sensei Brendan O’Neill, Instructor with the Club based at the Hospital Road Community Centre in Omagh, being awarded 4th Dan.

Training for senior karate-ka resumed the following morning, as students looked at further Kihon, Kata and Kumite. The Gasshuku concluded with further Dan (black belt) gradings as Keith McBarron, Oran McCaffrey, Chloe Holden, Ruairi Martin and siblings Megan and Rory Burns, were awarded 1st Dan, and Joseph Gormley and Liam Martin achieving 2nd Dan. A busy two days of training culminated with Sensei Michele Martin being awarded 6th Dan.

Washinkai Karate was formed by Sensei Thompson in 1977. The style is derived from Wado-ryu Karate and recognised by the World Karate Federation (WKF). Training is based upon traditional Japanese/Okinawan karate styles of Wado-Ryu, Shotokan, Goju-Ryu and Shito-Ryu.

You can find Washinkai Karate Ireland in Irvinestown on Tuesday evenings, at the Enniskillen Forum on Wednesday evenings and in Omagh on Thursday evenings. Please contact Sensei Dave Martin on 07955428012 or email
